Burien Safe Sidewalks Now

Seattle residents feel unsafe walking | September 15, 2009

This story is from outside Burien but illustrates that keeping pedestrians safe is a region-wide challenge.  I count myself among those who have been nearly hit by inattentive drivers.

Half of Seattle residents think the city is safe for pedestrians, despite almost four in 10 who say they’ve had a near miss with a car while walking, according to a survey by the Seattle Department of Transportation….

SDOT officials say the results should help establish a baseline for the city’s Pedestrian Safety Master Plan, which aims to improve Seattle’s walkability, reduce car-vs-pedestrian collisions and design safer, more pedestrian-friendly streets in neighborhoods. Council members also took input on the master plan Tuesday.
